For the year as a whole, WIFO expects weak real GDP growth of a mere 0.3 percent. In 2024 it is projected to accelerate to 1.8 percent.

The war in Ukraine and the associated economic slump in Europe put pressure on the European construction industry, as does the sharply increased inflation. Euroconstruct therefore expects stagnating construction volumes in 2023 and 2024 for the countries represented in the network.

Countries have always used economic policy tools such as import duties, taxes, sanctions, or regulatory instruments to achieve geopolitical objectives, but the practice has become much more widespread with the re-emergence of international power rivalries. Countries such as Austria and political alliances such as the EU must embrace this new reality and sharpen their own geoeconomic instruments.

The latest Annual Report of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research was published on 24 February 2023 and is now also available in digital form. "WIFO repeatedly proved its worth in the crisis year of 2022, successfully fulfilling its task of providing policymakers and society with orientation in difficult times", said WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr.

The weakening of the economy was felt in all federal provinces in autumn. According to the regional economic indicators, the dynamics of economic development decreased noticeably compared to the first half of 2022.
